They Look Good, But Time for a Change
Revision of previous breast augmentation is commonly required, sometimes months and sometimes many years after the initial procedure. Breast implants are not lifetime devices. Many factors may contribute to dissatisfaction with a previous augmentation and/or deterioration of a once good result. Aging with monthly cyclic hormone stimulation to the breast, pregnancies, weight fluctuations, minor trauma, and the human body response to the presence of implants over time all may affect the appearance of augmented breasts. Changes that may develop include implant malposition (implants too low, too high, too far apart, or asymmetric), obvious scarring, rippling, wrinkling, firm implants, un-natural implant shape, sagging breasts, implants too large, implants too small, visible contour irregularities, infection, rupture of an implant, and others.
Because the situation and needs of each woman are unique, Dr. Laverson approaches revision on an individual basis: Existing problems or dissatisfaction must be significant enough to justify the cost and risk of revision surgery before proceeding. If there is a minor problem but the result is overall very good or excellent, it may not be wise to revise because the secondary result may not be better. If the implants are old, ruptured, firm, uncomfortable, and/or appear un-natural or not beautiful, it is probably worth revision and/or replacement. Although good long lasting results can never be guaranteed, Dr. Laverson will not advise revision surgery unless he is quite confident that your result can be improved.
